The TPW West First Year program consists of four week-long sessions held over the course of an academic year. Two of the sessions are in the San Francisco Bay Area; one is in Washington D.C.; and one is in a developing country. Each session is an intense learning experience and the participants form lasting bonds and friendships. The First Year program provides an in-depth and systematic approach to developing strategies for maximizing effective giving. It addresses emerging models of philanthropy and assists participants to identify the most effective strategies for meeting their goals. Throughout the four modules, participants explore difficult issues commonly faced by funders, such as:
-
Retaining humanity, humility, integrity, and a sense of humor when barraged by daily requests for funds.
-
Creating constructive relationships with other funders, innovators, and grassroots leaders.
-
Setting goals for supporting communities the donors serve.
-
Identifying strategies, or a theory of change, for reaching those goals.
-
Learning ways to leverage personal contacts, and financial and in-kind resources to be more effective.
-
Supporting and leveraging a philanthropic network.
TPW West provides a collegial and confidential forum for such discussions.
