Session II:
The purpose of Session II is to explore the intersection of philanthropy, public policy and media. We spend four days in Washington, D.C. visiting with leaders of nonprofits, think tanks, lobbyists, journalists and other experts to better understand the role of philanthropy in the process of policy analysis and advocacy. We learn what foundations and individuals can and cannot do to support advocacy. We do training sessions on Capitol Hill to demonstrate how to hold effective meetings with lawmakers and develop strong messages to advocate on behalf of an issue or organization. We learn about how to interact with the media, and how to support media strategies. We engage in case studies on both domestic and foreign policy issues.

In the past, we have explored trade policy, climate change, health care strategies, international advocacy campaigns, and education reform. Among the speakers we have met with in Washington, D.C. are Jim Lehrer, Samantha Power, Rory Kennedy, Moises Naim, Judy Woodruff, David Ignatius, Marvin Kalb, and Mario Marino, as well as members of Congress. Samples of some larger organizations we have visited are the Center for Global Development, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Oxfam America, BoardSource, the Center for American Progress, and National Environmental Trust.
