I am happy to be home and yet feel that part of me still lingers in Africa. I know I must travel there again. Friends want to hear the stories and I try to share them but somehow there is no way to express the deep emotional component of the experience. I am stunned to realize that the success of ventures there rely on people like us. There is no superhero or magic pill that will heal everything, but a series of holistically oriented steps that must be taken to encourage health and vigor in the region.

The issue of men is a troubling one but I do not think that the lack of focus on them by the women's movement indicates disregard. I think it recognizes that there are terrible cultural imbalances between men and women that must be addressed if the country is to prosper. By empowering women you create change within the family culture that carries into the next generation. It has been shown that one dollar given to a women goes as far as ten given to a man. The first priority of a woman is her family and so children and husband all benefit. These countries are in triage mode and to me this approach makes sense strategically. I was humbled and awed by the power of intention as expressed by women and some supportive men.

The only program I've heard of that works to re-train child soldiers is run by a young Liberian man named Kimmie Weeks who survived cholera in the refugee camps during the war. His organization is: Youth Action International. I do not have extensive knowledge of this group but met Kimmie and know that he is a man of integrity and vision. I am sure his programs are more balanced than the evangelistic approaches of the General and I would be curious to explore them further.

I look forward to more discussion of our experiences together. There is still much to glean from the readings and each other's impressions. Thank you for putting the recruitment of ex-combatants to the Ivory Coast in perspective for me. I remember hearing the words but had not really digested their meaning in the state of overwhelm that I experienced meeting Joshua (the General Butt Naked).

Welcome home! You, Leah and Kim did an amazing job of guiding, nurturing and challenging our group. Thank you.

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=B88AAF77-9AA7-41AD-B132-C3709F364EF3

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=B88AAF77-9AA7-41AD-B132-C3709F364EF3

RE:Day 1 in Ghana!

Thanks for the terrific report. Consistent (universal) take-away: collaborate with indigenous assets. Great that you're challenging actual Outcomes, although when you only nudge the needle a little it's hard to discern that contribution. It's good though that you're prodding them to think about it. Doing good is a lot easier than achieving good.

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=97FE0912-264B-4696-9006-95E93442F849

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=97FE0912-264B-4696-9006-95E93442F849

RE:More about Liberia – from Glen

Great synopsis of the day Glen! There is so much to learn here about making wise choices in philanthropy. This is my first time in Africa and I am a bit off balance... Issues are amplified and out of their normal contexts, providing the perfect opportunity to explore the educational precepts we discussed in the first module of our training. Thanks Glen, Leah and Kim! Your skillful organization is evident in each chapter of discovery.

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=60888424-4087-466F-B4D0-575B72F32ECD

http://tpwwest.org/blog.htm?a=&nid=60888424-4087-466F-B4D0-575B72F32ECD

TPW West Holiday Party

http://tpwwest.org/pt/TPW-West-Holiday-Party-12.7.2010/events.htm?a=&

http://tpwwest.org/pt/TPW-West-Holiday-Party-12.7.2010/events.htm?a=&
